Last week, in Michigan, a three-year-old girl was discovered, lying in a ditch, alone, naked, and shivering. The incredible story of her rescue, however, goes back much further than one might imagine at first read.
Because the only reason why a man – whose identity has been kept anonymous – found this girl was thanks to his rescue dog, Peanut.
About a year ago, Peanut was brought into a local animal shelter in Escanaba, Michigan. At the time, she was about four months old and had been severely abused. She had broken legs, ribs, and her stomach was filled with carpet.
Once she’d been treated for all her wounds, a family met her, fell in love, and decided to take her in.
Everything started getting better for Peanut after that point. But then on March 17, Peanut began to go crazy.
Her new family was shocked, as Peanut had never shown this sort of behavior before. She ran up and down the stairs, barking all the while, and refused to stop. She even rushed into the garage to find one of her owners, demanding that he follow her.
The man decided to let Peanut out into the yard – where she began racing away at top speed. Not knowing what was going on, the man decided to follow his dog, lest she got lost and ran away.
But then, Peanut suddenly stopped.
And when the man caught up, he was stunned to find a three-year-old girl, naked, curled up, and lying, shivering, in a ditch alone.
It was only 32⁰F outside, but the man quickly removed his sweater and picked the girl up, wrapping her within the fabric. Then, he rushed back to his house and called the police.
By the time police arrived at the scene, the girl had almost been reduced to nothingness. She only had the strength to say “doggie,” before she was brought to the hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office has the most recent updates on the case.
The girl has since been taken in by Child Protective Services, as police discovered that the girl’s home was an unsafe and unsanitary place for the girl to live. She had also been abused at the home by her parents.
As for Peanut’s family, the little dog’s owners are immensely proud of their pup for her heroism. They believe that she acted based on a “sixth sense” that she’d brought over from her own previous life of abuse.
“[Peanut] is a part of our family now and thanks to wonderful people like you at the shelter, she is alive,” the owners wrote in a Facebook post. “Without her, not only would she have been gone from this world, but the life of this little girl might have been taken as well.”
